Zoom basics: scheduling, starting classes and inviting students

This lesson will cover the basics of getting started on Zoom, including how to schedule a class, invite your students and let them into the online classroom in an orderly manner.

Scheduling a class

To schedule a meeting on Zoom, first navigate to the “home” tab. Here, there are several options. The orange “new meeting” button will start a meeting straight away, whereas the blue “schedule” option allows you to schedule a meeting in advance.

Once you have selected “schedule” you can then add further details such as the class name, date and time, etc. Be sure to enable a password for the meeting, to prevent unauthorised access, as well as the waiting room – this enables you to control when students are allowed into the class.

Inviting students to join the class

If you have already started the class, you can invite students to join by copying the link from the “invite” button.

Alternatively, if you would like to send students the link in advance of the class, simply select “copy invitation” next to the meeting under the “meetings” tab in the Zoom home screen.

Letting students into the class

If you have selected the “waiting room” feature when scheduling your class (a feature you can also activate by default in your Zoom settings/ preferences), your students will be held in a virtual waiting room until you are ready to let them in.

This ensures they cannot join the class early while you are still setting things up, and helps create a clean, professional start to the class.
