This guide will answer some common questions for independent teachers using SuperTeacher and share helpful tips specific for using the Abridge Academy resources on SuperTeacher.
How do I sign up for SuperTeacher?
To sign up for SuperTeacher, simply visit their website and complete the registration form. You will need to prepare:
- Self-intro video
- Profile picture
- Teaching certificate
Once your registration has been approved by the admin, you can then add additional details to your profile such as a text self-introduction.
SuperTeacher is not a company, and you are not “hired” nor “employed” by SuperTeacher. They are a teaching platform for independent teachers to organise your classes. Therefore, they do not have a competitive application process.
However, your registration does need to be approved by the admin for quality control and to help you set up your profile. Therefore, do make sure that you complete all sections of the initial registration form fully.
No, your documents (resume and teaching certificate) will not be displayed publicly. These are just used by the admin to set up your initial profile and verify your qualifications. They will use this information to list your qualifications and experiences on your teacher profile, although you can edit these yourself later on any time.
SuperTeacher is not just an ESL platform! You can teach any subject, to any age group. This includes English, Math, Music, Coding, Science, Arts and more!
How do I organise classes?
You can use the calendar to open up timeslots for one-on-one classes. These are then displayed on your public-viewing profile for students to purchase. Don’t forget to also set up class bundles to encourage students to purchase packages.
You can also schedule group classes – for these, you set the topic and date(s) in advance, add a cover image, and write a short course description.
A final option is to create self-paced asynchronous courses for either students or teachers – great for passive income!
Once a student has booked a class with you, you can view the upcoming class on your my classes page. 10 minutes before the class, a button will appear here for you to launch the classroom and get everything set up.
Yes, both teachers and students will receive upcoming class reminders via email – eight hours before class and one hour beforehand.
The calendar will automatically update according to the viewer’s timezone. Therefore, from the teacher’s end it will show your calendar in your timezone. When your students look at your profile, they will see the calendar with your availability in their own timezone.
Yes, you can set up class bundles, which allow students to purchase a package of classes at a discounted rate.
You may want to offer a special discount, either to a specific student or as part of a marketing campaign. As well as class package deals (mentioned above), you can also create coupon codes. Coupon codes can be generated under the “coupons” tab on your calendar page.
You can set your own rate for your independent online classes. SuperTeacher recommend that most subject teachers charge around $60/ hour, however some teachers earn over $100/ hour on the platform. Remember, you can always offer discount coupons or discounted packages if you wish!
SuperTeacher currently supports two payment options – card payments and WeChat pay.
Students from any country can pay via credit card or debit card. Students from mainland China also have the option of paying via WeChat pay (don’t worry, you don’t need a WeChat pay account yourself as a teacher). To pay via WeChat pay, parents should select “WeChat pay” on the checkout page to generate a QR code, then scan this QR code using their phone’s camera.
You can add your local bank or Wise details in your payout settings. To view your earnings and request a payout, visit your earnings page.
How do I use the Abridge Academy resources with SuperTeacher?
To make the most of the interactivity in the Abridge Academy resources, you should open them in the co-browser tool during class. After starting the lesson, click on the “co-browser” tab at the top of the screen. Open the Abridge Academy website, login and navigate to your chosen lesson.
Once the lesson is loaded, don’t forget to click the “full screen” button and you’re all prepared for your students!
At the top of the co-browser tool, you can click on the “co-browser permissions” button at the top of the screen to select who has control of the browser. Any students highlighted in green are able to interact with the slides, whereas those in red are not. Simply click on the student’s name to toggle their ability to annotate on/ off.
In a group class, we would recommend just allowing one student to interact at a time, to avoid them fighting over the activity!
SuperTeacher does not have their own annotation tools on the co-browser. However, you can use the annotation tool built into the Abridge Academy slides. Simply ask your students to click on the pen tool in the top right corner to open the drawing tool.
Nope! The first time you open the Abridge Academy website in the SuperTeacher co-browser tool, you will need to log in. However, the browser persists for that student, so next class you should still be logged in. Our website does log people out occasionally just to ensure your account security, but usually only once every few weeks.
Unfortunately not. According to the Abridge Academy terms and conditions, you can only use our lessons for live online classes. You therefore cannot use them for self-paced classes.
What other classroom tools are available?
The main whiteboard platform on SuperTeacher comes with a huge collection of tools – including text, image uploads, file uploads, shapes, drawing and more. You can also add pre-made supplementary resources directly to the whiteboard from the “resources” tab.
Additionally, you can open SuperKid’s document editor, coding editor or screensharing tools for more specialist classes.
You can open the practice classroom any time. Here, you can set up your whiteboard activities and download as a zip file. This zip file can then be used to import your pre-prepared whiteboard into any future class.
This approach is also great if you would like to create activities to re-use with multiple students, or would like to share your whiteboard activities with other teachers via SuperKid’s marketplace.
When you first join the classroom, SuperTeacher prompts you to check your camera, microphone and internet speed. You can open a more detailed troubleshooter during the class itself, which will not only show you your own technical issues but also reveal if there are problems on your student’s end.
Additionally, if you are finding it difficult to resolve the tech issues yourself, you can request live support from SuperTeacher using the “help” icon in the bottom left corner.
