Annabel – teaching practicum in Beijing

How was your experience on your teaching practicum?

The summer camp was so much fun! I learnt so much and met some amazing people. I really enjoyed teaching and getting to know a class and see how they progress with the help and new skills given to them.

Learning Mandarin was definitely something I wanted to work on while I was there and the student led classes definitely allowed me to learn so much.

It was also great to see the kids so excited about teaching us their language and culture.

Would you recommend doing a teaching practicum to a friend and why?

Yes, it is a great way to travel, gain teaching experience, speak to new people and learn so much.

Everyone who takes part wants to have fun and make the most of their time!

What did you learn from taking part in the program?

I learnt about how to teach effectively, to deal with homesickness and being so far away, how to control a class, I gained more self-confidence and (the best part, as a language student) learnt some Mandarin!

How will the program help with your future career/ studies?

I am planning to become a language teacher so this gave me a good idea of what teaching might be like, with real hands-on teaching experience.

What was your favourite/ most memorable moment?

My favourite moment was watching my class do the speech competition.

It was incredible seeing how hard they worked and how much their English had improved in the 10 days at the camp.
